West Virginia Travel Destination & Attractions | Visit West Virginia State Penitentiary Show In 1863, West Virginia seceded from Virginia at the height of the American Civil War. Consequently, the new state had a shortage of various public institutions, including prisons; the Wagon Gate was the only building at this site during the Civil War. From 1863 to 1866, Governor Arthur I. Boreman lobbied the West Virginia Legislature for a state penitentiary but was repeatedly denied. The Legislature at first tried to direct him to send the prisoners to other institutions out of the state, and then they directed him to use existing county jails, which turned out to be inadequate. After nine inmates escaped in 1865, the local press took up the cause, and the Legislature took action. On Feb...

Re-Membering Our Prodigals Rev. Mike Lamson May 6, 2012 Thank you. Wow, what a warm welcome. It’s an amazing feeling to be up here and see this. When I was asked to give the sermon by our senior pastor, I realized as I thought about it that this will be the fifth sermon I’ve ever given in my life. Can you imagine? I’ve always been the kind of person who looks for the talents that people have, and I want to support other people in bringing out those talents. So it was quite a shock for me when I realized I’m going to be the one up at this podium this time. Good morning and welcome to Lovin’Life Ministries at the beautiful Manhattan Center in New York City. I must say that things look a lot different from up here. I think all of you should try this sometime. I want to thank everyone from...
Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania, October 26-28, 2011. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Crater Highlands of Tanzania, west of Arusha. This video looks at the wildlife occupying the Ngorongoro Crater, the caldera of a volcano that exploded 3 million years ago. The crater is 600 metres (2000 ft.) deep and about 32 km (20 mi.) across. The wildlife are somewhat isolated from the outside by the steep walls, but some do leave, especially some of the wildebeest during the wet season (not all wildebeest participate in the Great Migration). We were there at the start of the short-rain season that precedes the wet season. The landscape was still quite dry but occasional rain showers (short-rain) were starting to green the vegetation. One...
Game drives into the Serengeti N.P., Tanzania, October 28-30, 2011. From Ngorongoro, we traveled to Serengeti National Park, via Olduvai Gorge--where we learned about the discovery of hominid fossils, representing 3.5 million years of human evolution, associated with the Great Rift Valley. The Serengeti (meaning "endless plain") is located in the Rift Valley and is noted for its concentrations of wildlife. It shares with the Maasai Mara in Kenya The Great Migration where huge herds of wildebeest and zebras move to find sufficient grass to sustain them. In October the herds are moving out of the Mara and into the southern Serengeti where they await the rainy season and the wildebeest have their calves in February. This year (2011) the migration was early and we only caught the tail end ...

First day of the new class
In the fall of 2013, students from the Multicultural Music Program at Morgantown Learning Academy (MLA) in West Virginia, led by their teacher Jen-Osha Buysse, reached halfway around the world to our students in the Udayapur Music Program in Tintale Village, Nepal. The Nepali children were thrilled to receive a hearty “Namaste” from their new American friends through the letters, pictures and songs that they sent. The Tintale kids responded through art, proudly presenting their school by drawing pictures of it to send back to the kids in West Virginia. The beautiful connection between Morgantown and Tintale Village continues, as the MLA students in America have sent their own artwork and homemade prayer flags to the students in Nepal. The MLA kids also have a new surprise: a recording of t...

Animator Lynn Tomlinson tells the true story of the last house on a sinking island in the Chesapeake Bay. Told from the house's point of view, this film is a soulful and haunting view of the impact of sea-level rise. It is screening in theaters as part of the Animation Shows of Shows, which Indiewire calls "one of the most profound cinematic experiences of 2015." Upcoming screenings are listed here; (https://www.facebook.com/AnimationShowOfShows). Now, for the first time, West tells his story-from his tough childhood in West Virginia, to his unbelievable college success at West Virginia University, his 40-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers, and his relationships with NBA ...
Photographs depicting the gardens and wildlife habitat of Waterside (ca. 1791) on Big Walker Creek in White Gate, Giles County, Virginia. Waterside is a 38-acre riparian valley homestead and wildlife preserve. One of Virginia’s original mountain-frontier settlements, its historic context and setting were pronounced “exceptionally intact” by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources during 2008. Waterside is unusual in that two of its structures—the 1913 farmhouse and 1926 mill dam—were built by designers recognized in more than 25 historic register listings and in one National Historic Landmark proposal. The homestead is located in the Allegheny Range of the Appalachians in the rural, sparsely populated district of White Gate, thirty minutes southwest of Pearisburg. It lies approx...

History Partridge and his academy The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent ...
